On January 19, Goldman Sachs announced its fourth-quarter earnings for 2020, making headlines for its strong financial performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced banks to figure out how to do more of their business virtually, and Goldman has earned headlines for that too. In March, when much of the economy was shutting down, its tech and operations teams were shipping thousands of monitors, hard drives, and other pieces of equipment around the world, so that 98 percent of its 38,000 employees could work remotely. The quick turnaround drew praise for its ingenuity, as did Goldman’s Chairman and CEO, David Solomon, whom the crisis proved to be, in the words of the New York Times, “a deft navigator.”

But then, ever since he became CEO in October 2018, Solomon has focused on navigating the 152-year-old bank through the swirling rapids of economic change. After the days of the financial crisis, when Goldman relied heavily on trading for its profits, Solomon has sought to broaden its sources of revenue, for instance by creating its own entirely digital commercial bank, Marcus.

And now that the economy is confronting a new set of challenges, ranging from the stalled vaccine rollout to rising unemployment claims, the HBS Club of NY has invited Solomon to share with us his perspective on what lies ahead.

Solomon will discuss what the global economic prospects are for 2021; how growing investor interest in climate transition and inclusive growth is reshaping the financial industry; and what leading a global bank in the midst of a pandemic has taught him about leadership.

Please join us for what promises to be a wide-ranging and fascinating conversation.

The zoom link will be emailed on the day of the event to the first 30 registrants.
